Intimacy of water
This project investigates the physiological and architectural properties of water, focusing on how the element can generate spatiality and add bodily qualities to architecture. Through an exploration of the various phases of water: from liquid, cold water to airy, warm steam, its shifting characteristics are examined. The work explores, among other things, how the caustic light reflections of water can enliven a space, and how steam can envelop and dissolve physical boundaries.

The project is sited on Pikkerbakken, south of Frederikshavn, at an altitude of 75 meters overlooking Kattegat. Located near the bunker complex of Bangsbo Fort, the project draws inspiration from the bunkers’ ability to adapt to the terrain, integrating itself as a natural part of the surrounding landscape. The result is a rustic sensory laboratory that conveys a sensory synergy between the body and water.
Through a detailed spatial investigation and re-drawing of the various bunker typologies at Bangsbo Fort, the project analyzes their internal configurations, structural openings and strategic interaction with the surrounding landscape. By dissecting these heavy subterranean volumes, six recurring spatial characteristics were identified. Together, these form a foundational design codex that directly informs the project’s architectural language, materiality, and structural logic.
